CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE
On this weeks episode of UptoDate With Kate the Podcast I sat down with Casey Caldwell who is the owner of Sprinkles&Grit to talk about all things wedding cake related! In this post we are going to talk about 8 things your’re forgetting to consider when you are ordering your wedding cake! We will talk about how far in advance you should order, what style of cake you should get, fun alternatives for those who don’t want to do a wedding cake, and much more!
1. Book your cake at least 6 months in advance!
This is critical to ensure that you get the cake of your dreams! Not only do bakeries take orders for wedding cakes but you also have to consider that they book up for birthdays, holidays, and other events. Booking as soon as possible can ensure that you get the baker and cake you want!
2. What you should have prepared for your cake consultation..
A cake consultation is an opportunity for you to meet with the bakery, go over designs, and taste the cake/icing flavors that they have to offer. Brides should bring inspo pics of their dream cake and also pictures of the wedding vibe and decor as a whole. You should also know a range of how many guests plan on attending the wedding. Brides should also bring the contact information for their florist and the contact information for their coordinator if they have one. If you don’t have a coordinator that is okay! It is still good to have the contact information for somebody that the baker can contact the day of wedding without bothering the bride. Pro tip – the cake is normally delivered two hours before the ceremony. This benefits the bride because you can ensure that the cake is there before the ceremony and benefits your photographer because it allows them to get all the detail pictures before the ceremony!
3. Display Cake VS. Sheet Cake VS. Cupcakes
Are you stuck between doing a display cake, sheet cake or cupcakes? Well this next message will make that decision a little easier.. consider how far away your venue is from the bakery! If you want to do a 3 tiered cake you should make sure that there is a bakery that is close that way it is easier to transport and lesser chance of something happening to the cake. If you plan on having an outdoor summer wedding it is good to plan on having a sheet cake, this will help avoid the issue of the cake melting by the time the ceremony starts. If you plan on having a dessert table cupcakes are a great option, they provide an easy way for people grab their dessert and adds a great touch to the table. If you do plan on having a display cake it is a good idea to get cupcakes too especially if you have a big wedding.
4. Cake Cutting
This is the most looked over part of the wedding day! Many people remember to order the cake but many forget to consider who is going to cut it! If you are having catering then some caterers will cut the cake for you if they are still there. If the caterers are unable to then you could ask someone such as an aunt, cousin, or even bridesmaid! It is good to have someone lined up that way the day of the wedding you aren’t frantically searching for someone to cut the cake. If you have a wedding coordinator, they can help as well 🙂
5. Real Flowers vs. Fake Flowers
If you’re wanting to incorporate flowers onto your cake but can’t decide if you should use fake or real flowers, here’s your answer…
6. Look for the perfect cake for YOU
When choosing a cake you’re not only choosing the cake flavor or icing, you’re choosing a bakery too. Make sure that your baker is someone you can communicate with. It is good to look for someone you can depend on, can meet your needs, and will answer all your questions.
7. Are you considering a naked cake?
Let’s talk about the newest trend… naked cakes! The beautiful naked cake is becoming one of the must haves at many weddings today. One thing people are forgetting when getting this cake is that you need to make the cake all one flavor. If you have multiple flavors the cake will not look good as all the different colors will show through. If you do plan on having a naked cake it’s a good idea to have cupcakes too if there are other flavors you want to incorporate.
8. For those looking to do something out of the ordinary…
If you are someone who doesn’t want the traditional wedding cake there are tons of other fun treats you can incorporate into your big day!
I bet you didn’t think all these things could go into your wedding cake but they do! Being in the wedding industry I wanted to help brides with every single part of the wedding planning process. I hope that all these things will help you in your wedding planning! Make sure to share this with a friend you think would love this post! <3
